Would you like to understand why and how guys think differently from girls when it comes to infertility?

Do you want the truth about the impact of infertility treatment on how guys behave?

Or do you want to handle the differences between guys and girls better than you do now?

If the answer to any of these questions is 'yes', then this could be the most important webpage you’ll ever read.

The first video insight into what it feels like for a guy on the Infertility Rollercoaster

I must be crazy to do this, but never before has there been a publicly available video programme that describes everything a guy goes through on the Infertility Rollercoaster.

Would that be helpful for you?

You see, in just 60 minutes ‘The Infertility Rollercoaster’ DVD takes you through everything that I went through – the hopes, the fears, the hurt, the grief. Everything.

You will have a private ring-side seat to my journey on the Infertility Rollercoaster.

And you’ll see that you’re not alone.

Why should you listen to me?

Why should you listen to me? Well, first, I’m a patient and not a professional infertility specialist. You won’t get any mind-bending jargon from me.

And I’m not biased in favour of any institute or a particular technology. I make no recommendations in the programme. I’m not selling anything.

Secondly, I’ve been through just about everything a guy can go through. You’ll hear it in my story but I had to cope with the distress of DI, the anguish of IVF and much, much more. I know what I’m talking about.

Finally, I guess I’m used to talking to large groups of people. In my day job I’m a motivational leadership speaker teaching at London Business School. I also work for companies and business schools in Berlin, Lisbon, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.

So while it is difficult to talk about these deeply private and personal issues, I have the strength to be able to share them with you.

Why have I created The Infertility Rollercoaster DVD for you?

infertility Rollercoaster DVD

Some of you might be asking why have I made this limited edition DVD available for you?

Well, I want everyone to be clear how much emotional support is needed by couples going through infertility treatment. I believe that more could be done by the private and public health services to address this incredibly important issue. This DVD helps to fill that gap.

I also want couples to appreciate that they need to support each other, but in different ways.

So who is The Infertility Rollercoaster DVD for?

You might be a patient or couple going through treatment.

Or you might be a counsellor or infertility professional who wants to understand the issues in more detail.

Whatever your background The Infertility Rollercoaster DVD will help you.

And, finally, I want to raise some much-needed cash for the Infertility Network UK. They do a fabulous job working on behalf of patients everywhere.

Let me be clear: I don’t get a cent for ‘The Infertility Rollercoaster’ DVD. All profits from The Infertility Rollercoaster DVD go directly to the Infertility Network UK. I do need to cover the raw costs of making the discs, but every penny of profit goes direct to Infertility Network UK.

So your support is really necessary here. You can make a difference - for yourself, on your own journey. But also by supporting Infertility Network UK in their work to support others.

What’s in the Infertility Rollercoaster programme and how will it help you?

You probably want to know – exactly what’s in 'The Infertility Rollercoaster' DVD?

1. In the programme you’ll hear my verdict on sex at ovulation time.

This will help you to understand why guys sometimes freak out and can’t perform to schedule. As a result I hope that you can relax more and not get too uptight about sex.

2. You’ll also hear what I think about those temperature charts which predict ovulation.

And I’ll tell you the best way of handling them. (It’s not pleasant.)

3. Then I’ll tell you about the most embarrassing things that can happen to a guy.

Especially when he’s giving sperm samples. I want you to be able to manage these things better than I did.

4. After that I’ll tell you what happens when you meet health service practitioners.

People sometimes seem to behave as if they have no idea what you’re going through. This DVD should help you to prepare for the unexpected in a way that I couldn’t.

5. How do guys react to the idea of DI?

There’s an important segment that deals with how men and women react to the prospect of donor insemination – and what that means for you in really practical terms.

6. I’m also going to show you the painful practicalities of IVF treatment.

What does IVF feels like for a guy. (Yes, it hurts us, too. But not how you might think.) If you have an insight into the unexpected side effects of IVF on guys you might be able to cope better with it than I did.

7. I’ll also deal with what happens when treatment fails.

I want to share with you ways of coping with failure and what seemed to work best for me.

8. Free bonus material on why we need to keep talking

In one of the two bonus videos on the DVD you’ll hear from Clare Brown, Chief Executive of Infertility Network UK, on why the emotional aspects of infertility treatment are still not dealt with by couples.

9. Why is counselling so important?

She’ll also explain why counselling is a real and important option for couples going through infertility treatment.

10. What tips and tactics are available to help people to talk?

Finally, in the second bonus video, I’ll explore with you some of my work on ‘How to talk so people will listen (and listen so people will talk)’. I’ll share with you four simple conversation strategies that can immediately help you to become stronger as a couple.

What you will get on The Infertility Rollercoaster DVD?

Here’s a schedule of exactly what’s on the full DVD programme - there are 58 content-filled minutes on the disc:

1) The Infertility Rollercoaster (1m20s)
First there’s a one minute animation I made to introduce the DVD. It highlights just some of the feelings I went through on the ups and downs of the rollercoaster.

2) What it feels like for a guy – National Infertility Day keynote lecture (36m54s)
Secondly there’s my keynote lecture at the National Infertility Day 2006. It covers everything you wanted to know about what it feels like for a guy – and much more. It’s a gritty, real-life report of how the Infertility Rollercoaster has treated me.

3) FREE BONUS: Keep Talking – an interview with Clare Brown (4m14s)
In this interview with Clare Brown I ask her why men don’t have a reputation for talking, and we discuss the importance of counselling. We also explore what happens to guys who are technically not infertile. But they still have to deal with infertility because their partners can’t conceive.

4) FREE BONUS: How to talk so people will listen – a Leadership.FM podcast (15m22s)
In this bonus video from my work at Leadership.FM I discuss the four strategies for getting people to talk. I believe this will be really useful for guys who are not used to handling uncomfortable conversations.

There are also contact details for Clare Brown and Infertility Network UK, and a biography of me, Steven Sonsino, which tells you a little about my work as a business school professor.

What do other people think of ‘The Infertility Rollercoaster’ DVD?

I’ve known Clare Brown, Chief Executive of Infertility Network UK, for about 20 years now. Here’s what she says about 'The Infertility Rollercoaster' DVD.

You'll get a good deal from hearing his story

It seems to me that what happens to us during the course of fertility severely affects our sense of humour. I’ve found that everything can become unbearably heavy - if we let it.

In ‘The Infertility Rollercoaster’ DVD, Steven Sonsino tackles the issues of infertility with a light hearted approach that frankly we really need. Don’t be fooled by the approach, though. The issues he raises are really important.

You see, Steven tells us what it feels like for a guy on the Infertility Rollercoaster. And that’s not something we hear every day. Now I know you’ll get a great deal from hearing his story. But you have to hold tight. Good luck.

Doriver Lilley, co-founder of the ACeBabes organization, introduces the DVD and here’s what she says.

Despite the light-hearted approach, Steven's message is a serious one

Steven Sonsino is a business school professor who teaches at London Business School, the University of Berlin and in Portugal.

So he’s used to talking to large groups of people.

Unfortunately, most of what he talks about is complete rubbish.

Today he’s promised to focus on something of importance to all of us – the Infertility Rollercoaster and what it feels like for a guy. Which is a story we rarely hear.

He has agreed to our restrictions – but in exchange he says he will freely use the words masturbate, sex, and whipped cream.

Despite Steven’s light hearted approach to infertility, his message is a serious one. And I know you’ll get a great deal from hearing his story.

It was a great pleasure for me to meet Sam Abdalla, Director of the Assisted Conception Unit at the Lister Clinic, at National Infertility Day. He called to leave me this message and said I could share it with you.

It made me understand the depth of feeling of what our patients go through

Hello Steven

I was at your talk at the National Infertility Day and I thought it was really brilliant. I was very impressed by the way you approached how the guy feels. And as a doctor who treated you a long time ago I feel so proud of being a party to your talk.

It made me understand really the depth of feeling of what our patients go through. Although one always feels that this is the case, hearing it directly, from a patient, whether they were successful or not, makes one more clear of how to approach patient management.

Your delivery was brilliant. Your passion was fantastic. And I was really very proud to have been a party to your story. Thank you very much for all your effort.

I have also been speaking with Helena Hird, Head of Public Relations at the Human Ferilisation and Embryology Authority. She telephoned shortly after National Infertility Day and left me the following message. I asked her if I could share it with you and she agreed.

Your talk will be useful as part of our
staff induction process

Hi Steven

This is Helena from the HFEA. I was ringing because we wanted to order a couple of copies of your DVD - of the talk you gave at National Infertility Day... Because it was fantastic.

We've had some really good feedback on it from the people who attended. And they thought it would be really useful as part of the HFEA staff induction to include that talk.

I wonder if you could give me a call and we can fix up how we can order a couple of copies. Thanks very much.

What do patients think?

Here's a message I received unprompted from Nicola Dawson, who attended the session you will see on the video. She agreed that I could share it with you.

I think it will be incredibly helpful

I sat there at The Infertility Rollercoaster session, laughing and crying with the other 500 or more people as you spoke, and must say that I found it truly inspirational.

Unfortunately my husband couldn't be there on the day, so I will be getting a copy of the DVD for him. I think it will be incredibly helpful for him to realise that he's not alone in his feelings.

Thank you so much for your honesty. I think it will have made a huge difference to an awful lot of people.

Nicola Dawson

And here's another message I received, also unprompted, this time from David Lowe. He and his wife Elspeth agreed I could share this with you.

I found your talk moving, entertaining and funny ...
I certainly want to order a copy of the DVD

My wife and I were at National Infertility Day as we've started IVF this year. It has been one of the hardest things in my life to deal with.

Nevertheless, I found your talk very moving, entertaining and funny! I certainly want to order a copy of the DVD now it's ready. It - and the whole day - really helped us.
